The Patron Commission

For those who fund the stories a culture needs

You commission a book that must exist and place it in the hands it was meant for. The story carrier, the one whose life the book carries, receives the full Renown experience and owns the book. You make it possible.

What Will Your Patronage Say 50 Years from Now?

Capital funds buildings, programs, and campaigns. Almost none of it funds the stories that explain why any of it mattered. The market invests in influencers. Patrons invest in the good, the true, and the beautiful. The Patron Commission exists for stewards who want a story that must exist to actually exist, told by the person who lived it, and placed in the hands it was meant for.

What's Actually at Stake

The Stories a Culture Needs Rarely Fund Themselves

When Left Unwritten

  • The leader whose life carries a movement never gets eighteen months with a storytelling guide. The story stays in fragments: a keynote, an interview, a eulogy.
  • The family whose story should travel further than its own table keeps it at the table. The next generation inherits the trust but not the understanding.
  • The market publishes what will sell. The stories that should exist wait for someone to ask the second question, and most never find that someone.

When Commissioned

  • The story carrier receives the full Renown experience: the excavation, the writing, the finished book, with nothing asked of them but their presence and honesty.
  • The book reaches the readers it was written for: by name, in hand, with a conversation afterward. Not a launch. A handoff.
  • The patron's gift becomes the reason a story exists, and it keeps moving: royalties return to the donor-advised fund or print more copies for the readers who need them.

The Real Impact

What Patrons Find
  • The book is the outcome. But something else happens along the way. The story carrier understands their own life differently by the end. Threads connect. What they learned becomes clear enough to hand down. The patron watches a life find its meaning, and gets to be the reason it was written.
  • Some patrons find the commission becomes a turning point in their own giving: a way to fund the good, the true, and the beautiful directly, with a result they can hold in their hands and give again.
  • Every commission is different. But most patrons tell us the book became more than they expected. Not because we made it important, but because the story already was.

What Ripples Forward
  • A commissioned book doesn't sit on a shelf. It gets handed to the hundred readers it was written for, then to the hundred each of them knows. The leader's successor. The foundation's next generation. The young founder who needed exactly that chapter.
  • The patron's name may never appear. What appears is the story, intact, in the voice of the one who lived it. That is how patronage has always worked. The Medici did not paint the ceilings.
  • That's the long-term work. Not philanthropy as a metric. Philanthropy as a story someone can hold. Most things a patron funds get spent. This gets carried.
The stories that exist because of you will outlast the capital that made them.

Who This Is For

Stewards of capital and culture who have started asking a different question. Not what will sell. What should exist.

Foundations that fund a cause and want its founding story told. Families who want the story of a mentor, a pastor, a founder, or a movement to outlast the people who remember it. Holders of donor-advised funds looking for a gift they can hold in their hands and give again.

Our patrons aren't defined by the scale of what they give. They're defined by what they want to exist. They've stopped asking what more they can fund and started asking which story, told well, would change the most lives.

If that's where you are, this work might be for you.

Begin With Discernment

Publishers ask: will it sell? Patrons ask: should it exist? If there's a cause you carry, or a story you believe must exist, every Renown commission begins with a conversation, and we'd be honored to listen.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a patron commission?
A patron funds a book that must exist. Often it's someone else's story: a leader whose life carries a movement, or a family whose story should travel further than its own table. The author receives the full Renown experience and owns the book. The patron makes it possible.
Can a commission be funded through a donor-advised fund?
Yes. Many patrons fund their commission through a donor-advised fund. We'll walk through how it works on a discernment call, and bring in your own advisors as needed.
Where do the royalties go?
Back to the patron's donor-advised fund. Or, if the patron prefers, toward printing more copies so the book reaches the readers who need it most.
What's the investment?
A commission is a six-figure engagement, reflecting the depth and 18-month duration of the work the story carrier receives. An accelerated path is also available. We're happy to discuss specifics on a discernment call.
Who owns the book?
The story carrier does. Completely. All intellectual property is assigned to the author, including derivative works, adaptations, and future uses. Two simple agreements make this clear from the start: one with the story carrier, and one with the fund that commissions the work. The patron makes the book possible. The author owns it.
What will be asked of me?
Far less than is asked of the author. A patron joins us for a discernment call, helps name the story that must exist, and funds the commission. The story carrier carries the eighteen months of dialogue and craft. You are kept close at the moments that matter: the outline, the finished manuscript, and the first copies in hand.
Can I commission my own story?
A commission is for a story that lives in someone else: a founder, a mentor, a community, a voice that would otherwise go unheard. If the story you want written is your own, or your family's, the Leaders and Families experiences were built for exactly that, and the first step is the same conversation.
