The Patron Commission

For those who fund the stories a culture needs

You commission a book that must exist and place it in the hands it was meant for. The story carrier, the one whose life the book carries, receives the full Renown experience and owns the book. You make it possible.

What Will Your Patronage Say 50 Years from Now?

Capital funds buildings, programs, and campaigns. Almost none of it funds the stories that explain why any of it mattered. The Patron Commission exists for stewards who want one of those stories told by the person who lived it, and placed in the hands it was meant for.

The Stories a Culture Needs Rarely Fund Themselves

Without a Patron

  • The leader whose life carries a movement never gets the time to tell it. The story stays in fragments: a keynote, an interview, a eulogy.
  • A family story that should travel stays at the table. The next generation inherits the trust, and the understanding stays behind.
  • The market publishes what will sell. The stories that should exist wait for someone to ask the second question.

When Commissioned

  • The story carrier receives the full Renown experience: the excavation, the writing, the finished book, with nothing asked of them but their presence and honesty.
  • The book reaches the readers it was written for: by name, in hand, with a conversation afterward.
  • The patron's gift becomes the reason a story exists, and it keeps moving: royalties return to the donor-advised fund or print more copies for the readers who need them.

The Journey of a Commissioned Book

Excavation

We uncover the meaning a life has carried but never named.

Alchemy

Experience becomes art: one narrative that shows what it all means.

From Our Clients

One Story
The voice behind the cause

We met the leaders of an organization fighting a global injustice, and over lunch it became clear where the story lived. The founder had built the fight, and the fight matters. One of their leaders carried the story: the face of the problem, with a voice and a presence that make people lean in.

The organization commissioned the book. The story carrier receives the full Renown experience and owns the book, and the organization makes it possible. Now in progress, it is written to carry readers into the heart of what this leader has seen, so that awareness grows, support follows, and more people join the work.

That is patronage: a story that must exist, placed in the hands of the person who carries it, and sent toward the readers who need it most.

Written for People who will join the fight once they feel its human cost.

“The meter wasn't running. I wasn't worrying about another bill coming... I could focus entirely on the story.”

-Retired Principal Partner, Edward Jones

“Renown helped us create a living link for generations.”

The Real Impact

What Ripples Forward
  • The story carrier understands their own life differently by the end. The patron gets to be the reason it was written.
  • The patron's name may never appear. What appears is the story, intact, in the voice of the one who lived it. The Medici did not paint the ceilings.
  • Most of what a patron funds gets spent. This gets carried.

Who This Is For

Stewards of capital and culture who have started asking a different question: what should exist?

Foundations that fund a cause and want its founding story told. Families who want the story of a mentor, a pastor, a founder, or a movement to outlast the people who remember it. Holders of donor-advised funds looking for a gift that lasts.

If that's where you are, we'd be glad to talk.

Begin With Discernment

If there's a cause you carry, or a story you believe must exist, every commission begins with a conversation, and we'd be honored to listen.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a patron commission?
A patron funds a book that must exist, often someone else's story: a leader whose life carries a movement, or a family whose story should travel beyond its own table. The author receives the full Renown experience and owns the book.
Can a commission be funded through a donor-advised fund?
Yes. We will walk through how it works on a Story Discernment call and bring in your advisors as needed.
Where do the royalties go?
Back to the patron's donor-advised fund, or toward printing more copies so the book reaches the readers who need it most.
I advise families. How do introductions work?
A commission often begins with an advisor who sees a client carrying a story that should exist. We never pressure anyone you introduce, we keep your role confidential unless you say otherwise, and with your client's permission we keep you in the loop. See how an introduction works.
What's the investment?
A six-figure engagement that reflects the depth of the eighteen months the story carrier receives. An accelerated path is also available. We are glad to discuss specifics on a Story Discernment call.
Who owns the book?
The story carrier does, completely. All intellectual property is assigned to the author. Two simple agreements make this clear from the start: one with the story carrier, and one with the fund that commissions the work.
What will be asked of me?
Far less than the author. You join a discernment call, help name the story that must exist, and fund the commission. You are kept close at the moments that matter: the outline, the finished manuscript, and the first copies in hand.
Can I commission my own story?
Yes. Many Renown authors are their own patrons, funding their book directly or through their own donor-advised fund. Your Story walks through that path, and the first step is the same conversation.
Patronage meets publishing.
